Electricity from solar power: How does it work?

Two arrays which are identical in technical terms may produce different amounts of electricity depending on the following criteria:

  • Location: France as a country is subject to sunshine in varying degrees. The greater the sunshine levels, the more electricity will be produced by the panels.
  • Orientation: In other words, the point of the compass towards which the active surface of the panel is turned (South, Southwest…). A South-facing location gives the best results in terms of electricity production.
  • The slope angle (pitch): This is the angle of the panel in relation to the horizontal plane. The ideal pitch depends on the position of the sun (the best pitch is when the sun’s rays hit the panels at a right angle), and therefore varies according to the latitude of the array and the seasons. Generally speaking, in France the ideal pitch is considered to be around 30°.
  • Shade: any degree of shade cast onto the array has a considerable impact on a solar array’s electricity production. It is therefore important to check that no obstacle (telegraph pole, tree, chimney…) gets between the sunlight and the array, whether in Wintertime or during the Summer.

Assess your roof’s solar potential

Solairedirect pays particular attention to the design, the aesthetics and the quality of your solar array.
