Why have a solar power plant?

The European Commission’s Climate and Energy package has set the following targets for the year 2020:

• Using renewable energy to meet 23% of our total energy needs
• The production of an additional 20 million toe (ton of oil equivalent)

This target cannot be met using conventional renewable energy sources

(assuming that only one energy source is used to try to meet these targets)
